Web and Graphic Design

Threetrees design provides custom web solutions for the charity, small business, and community organisation sectors.

Our approach provides:

Designs are produced on a consultation basis, so nothing is released until both parties are pleased with the result. Maintenance can be performed either by the designer, or the client - using third-party software if required. In other words, it's a flexible process.

A modern design philosophy of cleanliness and ease-of-navigation mean a Threetrees site is instantly recognisable. Behind the scenes, the Threetrees site is built for ease of maintenance with technologies such as the Xaraya CMS, PHP and MySQL being used to generate interactive and dynamic content where required, with the minimum of intrusion.

BN Information Security is an information security consultancy in Bristol. Ben contacted me to refresh his site design and to help provide clarity on the type of services he was offering. He wanted the site to look very dynamic, to give the impression of very frequent updates and to keep people returning. In line with a very clean modern design style, the BN-IS site is very expandable, deliberately to allow flexibility further down the line when new business projects take off.

This site features RSS syndication from a third-party blogging site, using the magpieRSS tool to consume, tidy and trim the external content into a suitable form for this site. The result is a clean display without any of the clutter of a full blog; and without having to re-invent the wheel to create editing tools, the project size is considerably smaller.

GS Productivity Solutions are an authorised UK reseller of the GibbsCAM and Renishaw Productivity Plus suite of software products, providing software based machining and inspection (probing) solutions; training, support and customisation. The site requirement was for a clean, modern look which promoted the metal-cutting, professional, and precision messages of GSPS.

This is an XHTML site - everything is defined with styles, so it's easy to maintain a coherent image. The repeaded use of the GS swirl, and the faded-lines template gives an impression of dynamism throughout. The site is designed to be edited by the owner using HTML tools, so it's well commented throughout with lots of section markers. The front page animation was converted from a recorded AVI, using a series of command-line tools based on mplayer and mogrify, with the same mask used in the GIMP to highlight the static images.

The Blewburton Hill project is a teaser for a book that's being put together by the local community of Blewbury. Members of that community can add articles and photos to the site through a simple web front-end. In fact, it's fully maintained by them!

The technology behind this is the Xaraya Content Management Framework. It allows the site to have items added by anyone, and displayed in a coherent style throughout the site. After the theme is designed it's easy to customise for different users to have levels of access. There's some other nice features too, like dynamic image resizing - so the submitter doesn't have to worry about the size of their files.

The premium-brand AVA Strawberry site was designed from scratch using suppled graphics and photography. The site is designed to be expandable - to accomodate the various requirements of the fruit growing industry.

The site is created in XHTML - so the content and styles are totally separate. In fact, for the vast majority of the development period three concept sites were running in parralel, each varying only by the CSS used to present the content.

The Pink Lady®PoleCats Polar Challenge team site features a simple bespoke "submit-approve" messageboard system. It is designed for easy maintenance by the team themselves, using third-party software to edit the site markup.

The Pink Lady® PoleCats site was created using graphic concepts from their brochure designers and PR team. Threetrees adapted the fixed-print concept and brand into a maintainable, easy-to-navigate web presence. This is achieved by fusing images from the brochure into the texture of the site, and reusing elements from the brochure in a web-friendly format. Site updates are done by the 'cats themselves, using third-party software, so a set of PoleCats-specific styles are used to maintain a consistent 'look-and-feel'.
